Datopian founder and CTO, Rufus Pollock, to speak at the EU’s annual semantic interoperability conference (SEMIC)
He’s speaking again! Here’s a brief overview of why you’ll want to tune in to this year’s edition of SEMIC next week to hear Rufus’ insights on interoperability.
On 15th October 2020, policymakers, IT practitioners and researchers will come together to discuss this year’s theme of ‘Sustainable Data Services’ at the EU’s annual semantic interoperability conference (SEMIC). Participating in the high-profile speaker line-up will be Datopian founder and CTO, Rufus Pollock, who hopes to focus on the potential of a frictionless approach to data standards for interoperability. Rufus is a seasoned public speaker who has presented his ideas on the information economy and the digital age at multiple international conferences, including as re
in Berlin, Lift in Geneva, and the Open Source Summit in Paris. Now he’s taking his platform online for the first digital edition of SEMIC.The Semantic Interoperability Community works to benefit the lives of EU citizens by developing solutions that support public administrations to perform seamless, meaningful cross-border and cross-domain data exchanges. In collaboration with the German Presidency of the Council of the EU, their annual conference is organised by the European Commission’s ISA2 Programme. This year’s interactive event looks at how to foster and maintain the large datasets that are emerging as administrations break down silos in favour of linked and open data. Participants will explore the ways in which large-scale data and vocabulary providers, such as governments W3C, can implement semantic versioning while negotiating complex dependencies. Rufus will be taking part in the closing debate, ‘Semantics and data policies: what should be the EU priorities’ from 15:30-16:30. Issues surrounding data policy have been at the forefront of Rufus’ career ever since he founded the Open Knowledge Foundation, an internationally-renowned NGO fighting for a fair, free and open future, in 2004. His book, The Open Revolution: Rewriting the Rules of the Information Age (2018) presents a new diagnosis for the ills of the digital age and charts a path to a more equitable, innovative and profitable future. He is the co-founder of the Frictionless Data specifications, an open-source toolkit that supports data users to remove the daily ‘friction’ that slows down data work.
